The Critical Path is the longest unbroken sequence of tasks running from the start of the project through to the finish, which then determines the shortest time possible in which to complete the project.  Contrary to popular belief, the Critical Path is not fixed, it is constantly changing.

Every time something changes during the project it has an effect on the relationships that make up the Critical Path calculation.  As a result, the Critical Path is extremely fluid, and just because a task is not on the critical path now, it means nothing, the situation can change in an instant.  This can cause major problems if you are not prepared.
